This is a lab heat sealer
for characterizing the heat sealing properties of plastic films and
contructions. The sealing mechanism consists of an actuator which
incorporates pneumatic actuation and hydraulic speed control, a load
cell under the lower platen to measure seal force, independent
temperature control of both upper and lower heat seal dies, a seal
dwell timer triggered by the load cell, and an independent (from the
control) pyrometer reading from a thermocouple embedded in the the
upper sealing jaw. The seal pressure is separately controlled by
preloaded springs.
This is the roll handling section of a
high vacuum sputter coating machine. All of the components shown are
designed to operate at vacuums as high as 1 x 10 -8 torr. Farnam
Engineering designed the roll and web handling
equipment as well as the external tramrail and cable and hose
handling systems which allows the extraction of the entire roll
system from the vacuum chamber for service. This is a three
motor system with two automatic tension zones, and edge guiding. It
is designed for continuous two direction operation like a movie
editor. Later machines have added features such as automatic baggy
edge compensation and automatic spreader roll positioning
